Officers were called to the home at 617 1st St. at approximately 8:30 p.m. on reports of a resident experiencing difficulty breathing, Police Chief Thomas Cox said. Officers Brian Monroe, Chelsea Marafelias, and Anthony Bellina saw smoke and flames coming from the first floor of the home.

"Without hesitation, the officers entered the home and evacuated one resident from the first floor," the chief said. "They then entered the home again and ascended to the second floor, where they safely evacuated two additional residents."

After confirming all residents had been evacuated, the officers coordinated with the Carlstadt Fire Department and mutual aid agencies to assist with firefighting operations.

One resident was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident. Two members of the Carlstadt Fire Department sustained minor injuries while battling the blaze.

"Our officers consistently demonstrate remarkable courage, running toward danger to protect and save lives," Cox said.

The fire was contained and extinguished by firefighters, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Carlstadt Fire Department Bureau of Fire Safety. Further updates will be provided as more details become available.
